Did you get Earth's message?

There has been a lot of fuss about global warming these past years. Documentaries and movies that convey the desertion of our planet pop out every now and then. Even children animations, like the movie “Ice Age 2”, have started spreading the message to our young ones. But… Why now? Why only now? I bet the signs of global warming were present even decades ago. It’s only now that people started putting attention to it. Now that evidences are greatly visible and effects have become devastating.

SIGNOS is GMA’s attempt to join the bandwagon of global warming warnings. Focused with effects in our own country, the documentary revealed to me that the problem is not only melting icebergs and drought. Death of marine life and floods resulting to loss of jobs, livelihood and lives – the harsh truth of global warming is that it’s here and it’s not stopping until we do something about it.

I do though recognize that the events happening in the Philippines related to global warming is not all about global warming but partly (if not mostly) human negligence and stubbornness. Let’s take the permanent flood in the Artex Compound as an example. Global warming caused the continued rise of water in that area but it’s also because of the non-operational pump, right? I mean it’s already man’s fault that our planet is becoming an oven, but I think it’s also man that’s amplifying the effects to damage us.

There may come a time that the damage may become unfixable. There are “green” movements appearing everywhere but what percent of the population are they? Five percent? Two? One? Commercial industries have started showing support with protecting the environment. There are “green” cars, “green” laptops and other “green” stuff. But again, what percent of the production are “green”? The word “green” now has been used to brighten up companies’ images. It has become an advertisement buzz word. There maybe concern but we lack goal.

Richard Gutierrez’s “help stop global warming tips” may look funny (well at least for me) but it could really help if we just start listening and set up goals. Using an energy-saving bulb won’t matter if you leave it lit the whole day. Along with action, we should also aim for something with the actions we’ve made. If you are to lessen your trash production, you should at least aim to do it for your lifetime and not just for a few months. If you are to use “no CFC” items, you might as well plant in your backyard. It’s not enough to show that you’re not contributing to the problem. We should all aim to help save the problem.

With all the ruckus of being environmentally aware and all, let’s not just go with the flow and ride the bandwagon. We should be truly aware that global warming is indeed a global concern and that something really needs to be done. Not just in our own houses, not just in our municipality but all over the world.
