Global Warming: A not so heard term before until we finally feel its presence. Many people take this thing for granted. When someone talks about the effects of global warming, we just laugh at it saying they are impossible to happen. Now, let us take a look on the situation around us. Think of those heavy rains we experience then suddenly shift to hot weather. Investigate on the gradual rise of water level in our sea, the sudden bleaching of our corals. These are just few of the primary effects of global warming that we are taking for granted. Nature is making its call to save her from the tentacles of global warming. Can we just ignore and forget our responsibility as human living in this earth? When will we act for her call?
Scientists say that before the start of the industrialization age, global temperature is at its constant. Machines requiring the use of fossil fuels are not yet invented at that time. But with the onset of Industrial revolution, the need to shift from manual to mechanical work began to take place. Industrial Revolution was a period in the late 18th and early 19th centuries when major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, production, and transportation had a profound effect mainly from manual-labor-based economy towards machine-based manufacturing. It started with the mechanization of the textile industries, the development of iron-making techniques and the increased use of refined coal. The introduction of steam power (fueled primarily by coal) and powered machinery (mainly in textile manufacturing) underpinned the dramatic increases in production capacity. This marked the start of the use of fossil fuels to power trains, automobiles and other machines of the industrial revolution. But as the saying goes: “there is always the other side of the coin”, this also marked the start of the increase in global temperature due to carbon dioxide as a by- product of fossil fuels when burned thus inducing global warming.
The term Global warming is the increase in the average measured temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century, and its projected continuation. According to research, global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the 100 years ending in 2005. These triggered many consequences that pose danger to human beings today. But come to think of it. Aren’t that we are the one who started making danger to our Earth? Therefore, we should also be the one to do solution to prevent continuous global warming.
Climate change is very obvious nowadays. Even in my personal experiences I am alarmed of what’s happening on our earth. There are many circumstances wherein you can see the consequence of climate change. Based on what I observe, just an hour of rain here brings a lot of rain water making the streets be flooded. Weather is most likely to be extremely hot or extremely cold. The worst is these two extremes happen just in few hours in a day. I remember the time when I was walking way through my class in a hot sunny weather then after a few moments it rained heavily. This was very awkward that I started hating weather here. But at the same time, I couldn’t act but to blame us, humans on what this world turned out to be. On the other hand, I try to be optimistic. I said to myself that it’s not yet late to act. We can do change even small ones. The simple plugging out of cable from its outlet when not in use, turning off unnecessary lights, recycling and reducing plastic waste, walking or biking instead of riding jeep when going to class, can help a lot. Environmental awareness is in short the key to lessen or to some extent solve the problem. We must all be socially responsible to take care of our Earth. Furthermore, future generations should be taught to take care of the environment. Not only the people of industrialized nations should the responsibility be held but to all people of the world. Nonetheless, all of us will be affected by this posing tragedy.
The documentary film Signos is very timely not just to show the real situation of our earth but also to take time to ponder on how we can help at least in our own little ways in preventing these disasters to happen for our own sake and for the sake of the next generation. What has been showed in the film is very alarming. The effects of global warming are all around us. The sudden rise of dengue and malaria cases due to increase in global temperature, rise of sea water level, decrease production of rice and other agricultural products, strong and frequent typhoons that passes across our archipelago, extreme weather conditions. All of these pose danger to us humans.
We are the no. 1 victim of climate change. We are being informed to take an action to the call. Small act of ours can do big. It’s not yet late. Now is the time to save our very own Earth- the only planet that can sustain life.
